It's so great to see quotes and questions coming from FIRST mentors and teams this year! This year we donated parts to be included in the Kit of Parts, as well as donating lazy susan bearings to FIRST Choice.

What's FIRST Choice? According to the FIRST website:

FIRST Choice is a menu of items available to registered 2012 FRC teams, for free, as part of their Kit of Parts. Starting December 12, 2011, teams will be able to view some of the items that will be available. On January 9, 2012, teams may log in to the FIRST Choice site, hosted by AndyMark, and use a set number of credits to select items they wish to receive.

Triangle Manufacturing has donated to FIRST for the past few years, and we're excited to continue supporting this great organization. Maintaining Triangle bearings...an achievable resolution

Happy belated New Year to all. We hope you've kept your resolutions so far. If you're like most hopeful resolution-makers, you've been saving more money, eating better or exercising. Losing weight and exercising are the top resolutions year after year.

We suggest a resolution that you can actually keep. It may not be as snazzy as buying all new workout clothes to "inspire" you to work out, but it will add to the life of your exercise equipment, lawnmowers or other machines that rely on bearings for motion.

If your outside machinery uses bearings, consider choosing a grease or oil that lists a lower temperature range, or choose a lighter weight oil. The lighter weight oil will have a runnier consistency, which can be helpful when temperatures drop.

If you notice your bearings squeaking when you do jump on that treadmill (even for a minute, just to convince yourself you should keep it for another year..in case you change your mind), you have dry bearings, which are a recipe for bearing failure.

Re-oiling could save the life of the bearing and it could save you some costly repairs down the road. Sleeve bearings need lubrication and allowing them to dry out could ruin both the bearing and the shaft. If this happens you have a broken and un-used exercise equipment taking up valuable real-estate in your basement (taunting you for your lack of motivation).

When you re-lubricate your bearings, you may notice some excess oil or grease dripping out, this is the least of your worries. Simply put a piece of cardboard or paper towel under the bearing and the dripping should cease.

Actually, when we think about, buy a new elliptical, treadmill or exercise bike. Many of our customers are exercise equipment manufacturers, so, purchase away. Maybe a new stationary bike or stair stepper would be just what you need to actually keep your resolution this year...

Triangle's Feature in "the fabricator" Magazine

We were honored to be featured in the October 2011 issue of the the fabricator. Greg Farnum, contributing writer, wrote an article entitled "Stampers' unique perspectives result in innovative designs". Triangle was featured along with another stamping company based out of Florida. Brent Walker, Triangle Manufacturing President, discussed how we work to help our customer's cut costs and how we are adapting to appeal to lower-volume customers.

Innovation, of course, isn’t limited to the Sun Belt.Triangle Manufacturing Co., Oshkosh, Wis., is a family-owned firm that provides parts and assemblies to the automotive, farm implement, packaging, HVAC, and retail display industries. According to the company‘s president, Brent Walker (who is not related to EBway’s Terry Walker), the business has put a premium on creative engineering, technical know-how, and adding value throughout its nearly 90-year history.Be that as it may, the 45-person business clearly prizes those qualities now, maintaining a staff of eight engineers with a combined 157 years at Triangle and five toolmakers with a combined 140-plus years of toolmaking experience.“This helps us provide full solutions, from design to implementation,” Triangle’s Walker said.To underscore that statement, he pointed to a sprocket bearing that his company recently created for a corn planting machine produced by a major agricultural equipment-maker. The metal part is involved in activating a mechanism that deposits the corn seeds during planting. Formed from eight different stamped steel components, the design drastically reduced the need for additional processing when assembling the final part.With this part Triangle also was challenged to accommodate the bearing to a hexagonal shaft.“We engineered a round shaft with a hexagonal inside that fit inside a round sleeve bearing. We used a flange mounting to act as a backplate to ensure sturdy mounting,” Walker said. “This product can be used in many different chain-driven applications, with the possibility of many differently shaped shafts,” he added. “It can also be further customized and altered for the specifics in any industry.”The benefits to the new system design are numerous.

“Our customer saved on assembly time. Because of the formed nature of the sheet metal, no additional welding was needed,” Walker said. “Also, we used no machined parts, and the only component not created through our stamping process was the sprocket’s oil-impregnated powdered metal bearing.”
Walker credited Triangle Manufacturing’s engineering and toolmaking capabilities with enabling this success story in a number of ways, some of which may not be immediately apparent. For instance, because the toolmaking is done on-site, the company can engineer and manufacture with no lag time, shipping products from its in-house shipping warehouse in a just-in-time (JIT) manner, Walker said.
Walker said JIT fits well with Triangle Manufacturing’s overall approach to business.
“What separates us from other fabricators and manufacturers is our understanding of OEM logistics and the part that can play in furthering quick turnaround and lowering part costs,” he said. “By shipping just-in-time, we reduce warehousing space. We have short lead-times and are able to maneuver shipping costs to be economical for our customers.”
As for Triangle Manufacturing, its strategy for the future revolves around continued innovation (see Figure 4).
“Along with many in the manufacturing industry, 2008 and 2009 were difficult years for sales,” Triangle’s Walker said. “Our vendors and customers were hit by the recession and production was down. However, we saw it as an opportunity to improve our internal efficiency in production and shipping. We are feeling much more confident about 2011 and are bolstering our sales with global expansion and new, innovative product development.”
The days of banging out thousands of simple parts on a stamping press may be gone for many metal formers, but plenty of stamping business remains for the companies able to use their expertise to resolve customers’ manufacturing dilemmas. This isn’t an easy way to make a living in manufacturing nowadays; it’s the only way.

How to Pick a Great Supplier

Choosing a supplier can be a huge headache. They become essential to your company and you depend on them to keep your company running smoothly and efficiently. A great supplier will make your job easier, not harder. Pick the wrong one and you could be dealing with late shipments, low stock , poor quality or lengthy lead times.
When choosing a supplier, here are some steps to include to avoid supplier conflict, lost products and wasted money.
1. Are they reliable?
A good way to gauge the dependability of a supplier is their history; how long they've been in business and are they in good standing in industry groups. Also, check out their website. Is it current and updated? Do they display their contact information? Is the information and pricing they present consistent? What is their return policy? How do they deal with faulty product? Can they guarantee their stock and fees?
If they want your business, they should be able to answer any that you have and provide additional information about their abilities and experience.
If possible, do a credit check. Do they have tax liens or any "failure to pay" alerts? These are red flags showing a company's instability. If they have a difficult time paying their taxes, that kind of unpredictable behavior will translate to their production and to your product.

2. How happy are their current customers?
If they can't please their current customers, chances are, you won't be happy either. Search the company on BBB.com, yelp.com or even Twitter or other social media channels. It should be pretty evident if they have unsatisfied customers, either through reviews, angry tweets or a low rating. Unhappy customers are typically more vocal than satisfied ones about their experience. Ask for testimonials, or check their website for comments from current or past customers.
A great barometer of overall customer happiness is their ongoing relationships and the length of a typical customer-supplier interaction and the amount of returning customers versus single purchases.

3. Do they have flexible shipping options?
No one wants to worry about shipping and shipping charges, it just has to work. A great supplier will make shipping, domestically or internationally as painless as possible. They should have knowledge of Customs requirements, EXWORKS and INCOTERMS regulation, along with helpful tips about shipping weight, packaging and cost.
Before purchasing, ask about their shipping options, do they have an onsite warehouse? Onsite shipping will cut down on the lag-time that you can experience between placing your order and your product leaving the supplier.

Triangle strives to provide the most efficient, nimble and low-cost shipping options available. We can ship: UPS, FED-EX, LTL, collect or pre-paid from our onsite shipping department. We provide this through custom software and an internal IT department that works to integrate our scheduling with our customer's scheduling systems with computerized MRP (Material Resource Planning). We can accommodate labeling and packing requirements, along with being EDI (electronic data interchange) capable.

4. Customer Service
In the supplier--OEM relationship, everything should function smoothly. However, sometimes things go wrong. In that moment of panic, you should be able to get a hold of you supplier instantly to get things back on track. Think about having to wait through automated menus, long hold times and voicemails; when all you want to do is correct a PO number or change a ship date. Will you be able to communicate effectively with the supplier? Will they work with you to make sure an order is correct?

When you call Triangle, a real person will answer. A person who sincerely cares about the progress of your order -- whether it's 10,000 tri-arm brackets or just a bearing for your lawnmower. A person will answer the phone, and more importantly, respond to your problem or adjustment. You won't be subjected to endless options, or juggled between departments.

5. Product Choice and Availability
Most importantly, does the supplier carry what you need? If you require something that isn't standard, can they custom manufacture it to your specifications? Ask to see prior custom creations and ask about average lead times, tooling costs and other unforeseen costs that can quickly add up.
Double check to make sure they can accommodate special material options, offer design and engineering assistance and ask about quality assurance.

Triangle's Take on How to Increase Manufacturing Efficiency

If you search Google for "how to increase manufacturing efficiency," you'll be inundated with 5,250,000 results. Many of these tips enforce "lean manufacturing," as defined by Wikipedia:

Lean manufacturing, lean enterprise, or lean production, often simply, "Lean," is a production practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. Working from the perspective of the customer who consumes a product or service, "value" is defined as any action or process that a customer would be willing to pay for.
Essentially, lean is centered on preserving value with less work. Lean manufacturing is a management philosophy derived mostly from the Toyota Production System (TPS) (hence the term Toyotism is also prevalent) and identified as "Lean" only in the 1990s.

For many companies it's impossible to adopt every lean technique, here at Triangle we've found ways of increasing efficiency that work for us.

REDUCE STORAGE AND INVENTORY, DELIVER JUST WHEN NEEDED

Triangle ships just-in-time. We achieved this through custom software and internal IT department to integrate our scheduling along with our customer's scheduling systems. And their labeling requirements, EDI (electronic data interchanges), integrating customer schedules with computerized MRP (Material Resource Planning).

This has favorably affected our business, it's helped us to retain our customer base because of our flexibility and accommodating their unique needs. In lean economic times, you have to differentiate yourself. We've done that through adapting our business to be exactly what our customers need, when they need it; in shipping and in production.

AUTOMATE WHERE IT MAKES SENSE

Triangle Manufacturing uses industrial robotics in many capabilities, automation between metal stamping presses and packaging and material handling during the metal stamping process. We also employ the use of robotics for tasks that can be environmentally challenging, like welding. For increased efficiency, we also utilize robotics repeated tasks where human intervention is not required.

We will continue to adapt and modernize our current automation with a focus on improving the material handling and minimizing human interaction in product manufacturing. We also try to expand automation where safety can be improved

ADOPT THE "RIGHT" TECHNOLOGY, NOT JUST BECAUSE IT'S "NEW"

Our use of robotics has become essential because it lessens the amount of manual material handling required and facilitates lean production processes. We've also taken steps to improve our tool making technology, through full utilization of CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) we spend less time designing and manufacturing tools and more time solving problems and working with customers. We've cut down on lag time through solid modeling CAD lessens time between conception and production.

Another tip is to always be aware of the benefits of new manufacturing processes, robotics and even more simple solutions, such as Triangle's shaft height adjustment mechanism. This idea can be used in many systems that require shaft height adjustment and when convenience and usability are large factors. Because of the ease of use, workers can adjust the shaft height without disassembling machinery and wasting time.

PROXIMITY OF FACILITIES

If at all possible plan your facilities around each other. What kind of processes will you be utilizing daily? What's most important to your business? Put them close together. Triangle's facilities house our Research and Development, Tool Room, Engineering Center, Onsite Shipping Warehouse and Production Shop. Along with our Accounts Payable and Receivable Departments, Purchasing, Internal IT, Quality Control and Marketing and Sales Departments. This way, our Export Coordinator and Shipping can interact, Engineering and R&D have a back and forth and Sales and Marketing can join forces.

Having all of this in such close proximity cuts down on lag time between design and production, lessens the travel time, expense and headache between departments and allows for a free flow of ideas between diverse departments.

The Manufacturing of Our Social Media

OUR EXPERIENCE

When Triangle dived back into the marketing game in February of 2010, we diligently started Facebook and LinkedIn accounts, got on Twitter, started a company blog, and set up a YouTube account. We posted photos, press releases, interesting articles, original content and part spotlights. We retweeted and posted and clicked and checked metrics and updated and linked accounts and did everything that the countless industrial marketing blogs tell you to do.

And?

The overwhelming result was ambivalence.

Like this article from Fast Company says,

"Depending on what you read or who you talk to, social media is either one of the most important components of a B2B marketing program because so many influencers are online or it is completely ineffective because so few business buyers are active in social media for business purposes."

Social media was "cool," it was fun to see things get reposted and to be mentioned by others. We liked sharing and creating content and finding relevant articles and studies related to our business. However, when it came down to it, what were the real results? Could we attribute any customers that were so moved by a tweet that they contacted us for a quote? It's understood that these new social channels weren't designed to provide instantaneous results even as an instantly gratifying medium. However, over the past year, we've come to the conclusion that in the B2C world, social media is a game-changer, but in B2B, it probably isn't. No matter how hard some industrial marketers want it to work, it doesn't seem feasible.

As the Fast Company article mentions, before you devote time to social media in an industrial setting ask yourselves this:

1. are the people you are trying to reach, using these channels, and if they are,
2. how can you calculate the value of B2B social media from a sales perspective?

We think social media could be a great tool, for the right company. Ours just isn't it. Our sales are driven by OEM's that have an engineering problem. We give them a solution, whether it's through re-designing a part, reducing the number of parts they need or customizing one of our standard options. These engineers don't lament their need for a better flange mounting as a status update on Facebook, nor do they tweet about needing to reduce costs. The best way for us to reach our customer demographic is to keep improving our skills and technology and to stay visible, online and offline.

SOCIAL MEDIA BENEFITS

YouTube is great for installation videos and tutorials and LinkedIn is an easy way to find contact information for leads. Supposedly LinkedIn is the best avenue for B2B companies to leap into the social media stratosphere. According to this study from Lead Formix, they say that "LinkedIn emerged as the most-used channel with 72% of B2B marketers using it to for their marketing efforts. The study also found that B2B marketers cited LinkedIn as the most important channel for them and identified lead-generation as the most valuable result of LinkedIn marketing."

When utilized social media is great for SEO and, we've found it's better to get to know people in the industry, rather than to reach customers. We've been contacted on Twitter for articles and features and found great resources through LinkedIn and the Twitter timeline. However, a lot of what we see on Twitter is purely promotional; companies endlessly thanking each other for a retweet or a #FF. It doesn't seem real or genuine; just a revolving wheel of links and salutations, interjected by a great article, survey, or an interesting video.

ThomasNet recently came out with their Industry Market Barometer survey, a twice-a-year review that asks North American buyers and sellers about the strategy and outlook of their small, private companies. This is the first report we've read in the last year that doesn't give social media only glowing reviews.

"While a large number of survey respondents say that Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are not important to their business, there is a growing number who claim it is important. Of all the social media, Industry Forums (50%) and Blogs (43%) top the list in importance for respondents for the first half of 2011, and a relatively significant number report that they still need to figure out how to make it work for them. "

We would say that Triangle is in the "still need to figure out how to make it work for them" subset. We'll continue using these social communities, but don't expect hugely successful results. For us at least, social media as a whole is not a savior of sales leads, nor is it a quick solution for slumping revenueand decreasing quote requests. We disagree with the idea that if you don't lunge at every social media possibility, that you'll be left behind with the Myspace and Friendster accounts. We still plan to use our human element to appeal to our customers, along with more modern channels of communication. They appreciate being able to call us and have a person answer, but we want them to have the opportunity to tweet us as well.

Marble Lazy Susans - Product Applications

We're always interested in the creative ways our customers use our products, from chicken plucking machines to chalk spinners to the more traditional cabinet and agricultural industry uses. One of the most beautiful applications for our lazy susan bearings would have to be through Marble Lazy Susan, owned by West End Stone. This California company uses 100% natural stone to create these revolving works of art.

They sell marble, granite and slate lazy susans along with cheese boards and serving trays. The revolving trays can be used inside or outside on a patio table. Because of our corrosion-resistant galvanized lazy susan bearings you won't have to worry about rust. They have a plethora of colors to choose from, their granite offerings include the scarlet-hued "Red Dragon" to the subdued "Baltic Brown." They also offer custom options and optional umbrella holes.

Triangle Manufacturing Provides Stamped Component Assemblies to Agricultural Giants

This "sprocket bearing" was created from eight different stamped components. For nearly 90 years Triangle has constructed quality pieces like this at a high quantity with low cost.

This piece is involved in activating a mechanism that deposits corn seeds during planting. It's used in a corn planter for an international agricultural manufacturer. Triangle was challenged to accommodate a hexagonal shaft, so we engineered a round shaft with a hexagonal inside that fit inside a round sleeve bearing. We used a flange mounting to act as a back plate to ensure sturdy mounting.

The benefits to this system are numerous. Our customer saved on assembly time because of the formed nature of the sheet metal, no additional welding was needed. The overall cost was low due to efficient stamp manufacturing. We used no machined parts and the only component not created through our stamping process was the oil-impregnated powdered metal bearing.

Through innovative engineering and strict quality standards Triangle can stamp manufacture small, precise components with high accuracy. This reduces the risk that arises when many components need to work seamlessly together.

It is said that "the engineer has been, and is, a maker of history;" and with the help of FIRST they will be makers of the future. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a program that helps young people discover science and technology outside the classroom. They combine aspects of engineering, math, design and mechanics to construct robots built for a challenge. Along with the help of mentors and parents from professional fields, this program culminates in a national competition where teams are celebrated and recognized.

FIRST reaches over 248,000 students each season with more than 22,000 teams that create over 20,000 robots. This huge collection of science-minded students and mentors create incredible contraptions that utilize mechanics ranging from garage door openers to PS2 controllers. This ingenuity only affirms the FIRST vision: to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.

The 20th annual FIRST Championship was held at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri on April 27-30th. Along with the thrill of the competition, mentors and team members were surprised with performances by the popular music group The Black Eyed Peas, Willow Smith of "Whip My Hair" fame and other celeb robotics enthusiasts. Morgan Freeman also showed his support for the FIRST competitors, volunteers and VIP guests by signing autographs and interacting with the students.

The FIRST Robotic Competition (FRC) featured the top 352 high school teams out of 2,200 total teams. Teams from five countries battled in a 3v3 match, on a "half-court" sized field. The robots were involved in a game called LogoMotion. Teams were challenged to program the robots to hang plastic inner tubes in the shape of the FIRST logo on pegs of a tall rack. Teams scored points based on the robots ability to place the objects higher and to form the FIRST logo with the tubes.

In a new twist, teams were also expected to create and deploy a "mini bot", which must be capable of climbing a pole in a race against the clock. Oshkosh's Wave Robotics, (#2826) which was formed only three years ago, placed second out of 88 teams. Each of the team members and mentors received a FIRST Robotics medallion for the amazing accomplishment.

Ann Marie Lau, whose son has been active in the Wave Robotics since January, was excited about the win. She says that "we were in 10th seed position before being selected by the team in 3rd seed position to join their alliance for the elimination rounds". Lau said that "being an important part of the winning alliances is a true testament to the mentors, gracious professionalism and hard work of the students!"

Lau feels that the vision of FIRST is evident in the Wave Robotics program: "this not only gives them hands on experience and training, it builds their confidence in the skills they are developing. FIRST not only encourages our kids to build communication skills (along with the math, science and technology), but demands it of them."

John Warning, a toolmaker at Triangle Manufacturing has been a mentor for three years. He said he was "very impressed with the way the students carried themselves" at the FIRST championship. He says that "no competition is easy, they are each unique and difficult," so he was very happy with the Wave Robotic's win.

These young engineers spend weeks designing and constructing robots and they are also directly involved in fundraising, marketing and web design for their team. Lau sums it up best, saying "if these kids are our future, it will be a very bright and energized one!"

How to Install Triangle's Lazy Susan Bearings

3” - 4” - 6” - 12” SIZES (WITHOUT SPEED NUTS)

A. Use the smallest holes as a template to mark the turntable for

blind fastening. Remove the bearing and

then drill holes for self-tapping screws. 3”, 4”, 6” sizes -- drill 5/32” holes for #6 self-tapping screws. 12” size--

drill 3/16” holes for #8 screws. Avoid contamination from sawdust, paint or any other foreign material.

B. Lubricate the bearing balls with a small amount of heavy oil or grease. Mount the bearing on the selected

center of the base using #6 wood screws.

C. Assemble turning section to the bearing. Make sure to select fasteners of the proper length to avoid interference

with the opposite section.

A. Use holes with speed nuts as templates to mark the turntable for blind fastening. REMOVE the bearing. Drill

and countersink 7/32” holes for #10 (3/16”) flat head stove bolts . Avoid contamination from sawdust, paint or

Bearings can also be mounted by welding, brazing, clamping, cementing etc. With the smaller size bearings,

adhesives have been successful in eliminating the need for screws and bolts. It is important to use a suitable

metal to wood adhesive or cement that will not get into the ball races.

The 20th annual FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science and Technology) Wisconsin Regional competition was held at the US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee on March 18-20. Fifty-one high school teams from seven states and Canada battled in a 3v3 match, on a “half-court” sized field.

The robots were involved in a game called LogoMotion. Teams were challenged to program the robots to hang plastic inner tubes in the shape of the FIRST logo on pegs of a tall rack. Teams scored points based on the robots ability to place the objects higher and to form the FIRST logo with the tubes.

In a new twist, teams were also expected to create and deploy a "mini bot", which must be capable of climbing a pole in a race against the clock. Oshkosh’s Wave Robotics, (#2826) which was formed only three years ago, placed 1st in the Finals.

Each of the 42 team members and mentors received a FIRST Robotics gold medallion and have qualified for a spot at the International Championships in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome (home of the St. Louis Rams), where they will face off against over 350 high schools from 14 countries on April 28-30.

New Game Announcement Kicks Off FIRST Robotics 2011 Season

In the FRC "LOGO MOTION" robotics game, two alliances of three teams will compete on a 27-by-54-foot field with poles, attempting to earn points by hanging as many triangle, circle and square logo pieces as possible. Bonus points will be earned for each robot that can hang and assemble logo pieces to form the FIRST logo. Robots can also deploy Mini-Bots to climb vertical poles for a chance to earn additional points.

Through collaboration with LEGO^® Education, a new opportunity to earn extra points is available to teams if they design, build and deploy a FIRST^® Tech Challenge Mini-Bot from their primary robot. For the first time in the history of the program, FRC will allow the use of the two robotic building systems from the FIRST^® LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge programs: LEGO MINDSTORMS^® and TETRIX^®.

At the FRC Kickoff, FIRST teams were shown the "LOGO MOTION" playing field and received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC and a mix of automation components - but no instructions. Working with Mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program and test their robots to meet the season's engineering challenge. Once these young inventors create a robot, their teams participate in competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of students.

In 1992, the FIRST Robotics Competition began with 28 teams and a single 14-by-14-foot playing field in a New Hampshire high school gym. FEATURES

QUIET - Maximum sound and vibration suppression achieved by resilient Neoprene cushion, maximum support area for low pressure weight distribution. Neoprene resists aging and decomposition.

SELF-ALIGNING - This spherical bearing ball unit is surrounded by a matching spherical cushion and allows for full ball and socket action. Rigid metal mounting prevents excessive compression of cushion which might lower resilience. The cushion, which is symmetrical with the axis of the shaft, does not misalign the bearing when end thrusts are applied. SELF-METERING LUBRICATION - The steel ball units used in these blocks incorporate an extremely efficient lubrication system. This includes capillary feeders in the bronze bushing which are fed by an oversize oil retaining felt compacted within the ball against the bushing. This large lubricant reservoir is well filled at the factory.

PRECISION BORE - The bores of all ball units are accurately sized and straightened after assembly to eliminate inherent variations that occur in all press fitted parts. Basic bore diameters are supplied to customer specifications.

VARIATIONS - The NA and NB series of Pillow Block contains Triangle's time-tested steel bearing ball units. These are available with oil, grease or Plastic E permanent type lubrication. Oil cups, plugs, Alemite fittings or sealed balls are supplied. Standard Bushings are S.A.E. Type 1, Class A sintered bronze. Grooved and graphited cast bronze or other bearing materials are available to specifications on production orders. Basic bore diameters can be altered to meet special diameter tolerances.

Why do turntable bearings fail? (from Machinery & Equipment MRO)

The classic mode of failure for slewing rings is fatigue, which is of subsurface origin. But today most fail due to lubrication problems, contamination, overloading, improper installation, or poor mounting fits, all modes of failure that tend to be surface-originated. They also occur much earlier than classic fatigue failures and are less predictable.

The main problems are inadequate lubrication, contamination and overloading.

Inadequate lubrication: Slewing rings require a heavy-duty pressure grease, reapplied at least every 100 hours when equipment is slow-rotating or used only intermittently. Otherwise, surface damage develops. It first takes the form of roughening or waviness; later, fine cracks develop, followed by flaking.

Contamination: Dirt and debris that get into the lubrication system act as an abrasive and accelerate wear. Usually they scratch or indent the bearing raceways, again leading to fine cracking and, ultimately, spalling.

Overloading: Turntable bearing life calculations are based on flat, rigid mounting structures. But when a structure distorts significantly under load or gets out-of-flat, loads are less evenly distributed, resulting in deformation. While turntable bearings are designed to handle combination loads efficiently, a load that exceeds the bearing capacity can lead to permanent deformation, and eventually bearing failure.

Problem signs

There are many signs of problems. If metal particles or flakes are apparent in the lubricant, some sort of wear is taking place. If the turning torque of the bearing increases substantially or has tight spots, this usually indicates an uneven load distribution. A grinding noise emitted from the bearing typically means inadequate lubrication and/or excessive wear in the raceway.

Play, or clearance, is an important indicator. A new slewing ring is assembled with enough clearance to compensate for the slight out-of-flatness encountered in a mounting structure. Wear can increase this clearance dramatically and increased clearance in turn accelerates the wear. This should be closely monitored.

Excessive bearing clearance due to accelerated wear results in less overall stiffness in the entire system. In construction equipment, this is magnified at the bucket, causing a potential safety problem for the operator. Poor work distribution (common among digger derricks where most of the work is done on the curbside) is another concern that can lead to uneven wear and excessive play. And a severely worn bearing can in turn cause costly damage to other components, such as the drive pinion and gear box.

Pillow block bearings are typically used in conveying machinery, cutting and slicing machines, packaging mechanisms and in other environments where sanitation is a priority. Few metals can tolerate excessive moisture and washing, along with chemical interaction. Stainless steel, while having a higher initial cost, is corrosion resistant and an easy-cleaning material.

However, this initial cost is compensated by Triangle’s cost-lowering stamping process. Through this manufacturing process, the high strength and hygienic metal surface is maintained, but the cost is significantly lower. Triangle linkage components can be purchased separately but are generally ordered fully assembled.

Triangle’s linkage assemblies are very cost efficient. First, we provide a complete linkage/rod end solution saving your company valuable assembly time. Second, we use very small amounts of material to manufacture very strong linkages. Our linkages have sophisticated design architecture to generate great strength from very little material.

These linkages can be manufactured with a clevis on either one end or both. The linkages are also available with straight holes. They can also be twisted or bent as needed for your specific application.

The bearing in each linkage is available in nylon, sintered iron or sintered bronze. Each end can have a different bore size, please specify when ordering.

Linkage Customizations
We manufacture and engineer finished linkages to suit any industry or design need. The value of a single-source linkage is in its flexibility and customization as it can be any size. Most linkages are produced in fixed lengths and end-to-end orientations, which has been found to make assembly in to a customer's product much faster, more reliable and less expensive than many threaded linkage assemblies.

Rod ends are among the most adaptable and commonly used linking apparatus in the agricultural, automotive and HVAC industries. Because Triangle is able to completely customize the rod end and linkage size, gauging and material used; the applications of these parts are endless and completely specific to each customer. Rod ends are used to transfer motion, whether the motion is shifting a gear in a lawnmower or controlling the throttle position of a Class 8 truck. Triangle has customized rod ends and linkages for use in headlight mechanisms and convertible tops. We have manufactured parts for the some of the largest automotive and agricultural companies in the world.

Material options: Bearings can be sintered iron, sintered bronze, nylon or manufactured from other materials as requested. All retainer rings are protected by zinc. Rod ends and linkages are made from cold rolled steel or galvanized steel. Please inquire (920) 235-3710 for additional options.

Triangle Manufacturing's products are completely made in the U.S. Our pillow block bearings, motor mounts and lazy susans have been dreamed, designed and manufactured right here in Oshkosh, WI. From the parts we create in our shop to the supplies we sell, we are American-made and owned since 1922.

Blogger, Michael Williams, has an "American List" on his blog, "A Continuous Lean." On this list, Williams has products ranging from leather goods to bicycles to tents. What these dissimilar products do have in common is where they are manufactured. Williams laments the current "Made in America" lists and directories online as being "tacky, he writes:

"There are many Made in the USA lists throughout the internet, nearly all of them tacky and in poor taste. These awful websites have led me to compile a list of stylish and cool brands that make their goods in America. One of my goals with this is to make it easier to locate and buy domestically produced apparel products. Another motivating factor is my desire for things Made in the USA to be embraced by a younger, more stylish consumer."

Self-Aligning Center Flange Mounted Bearings in The Daily Bearing

Our miniature center flange mounted bearings are designed for lighter duty applications or where smaller types of equipment impose space limitations. This design is somewhat stronger than side flange mountings, but requires a hole in the mounting panel so the assembly may protrude slightly to the opposite side. Available with your choice of a nylon, sintered iron or sintered bronze balls, this 16-gauge mount can be altered to meet any specifications.

Center flange mounted bearings are more affordable than side flange mount units and stronger because the load is centered over the flange. Engineered with three bolts and for use with our r eservoir bearings, our center flange mountings offer precision bores, oil cups or grease fittings, and can be customized to meet any specifications. Varying thinknesses are manufactured, including 11-gauge with our EF series, 13-gauge with our EE series and 16-gauge with our CB series.

Mid flange mounted bearings are used for many applications. Our GA series is the same as the GB series except that the mounting does not include a back plate. This is provided by the customer, punching and forming this mounting surface to the proper dimensions to act as a back plate. This saves the cost of an additional stamping, reduces handling time and makes an even more compact mounting. Triangle can assist with the design, which is easily accomplished on a NC punch press.

Designed for the residential and commercial HVAC industry, our motor mounts are considered to be the most durable and affordable units available on the market.

Built for over the last 40 years as a modular system, either in three- or four-arm units, our galvanized steel motor mounts are unique, easy to install and flexible.

Designed to dampen vibrations, each leg of the bracket includes rubber footings and can be configured in length and gauge to accommodate nearly any fan blade diameter. Special order ferrules and rubber footings are also available depending upon the vibration isolation needs.

The belly band and mounting arms are shipped as a knocked-down package, keeping shipping costs and storage space to a minimum. Triangle can supply a very low cost assembly fixture so that the motor mount can be assembled and mounted on the motor in the same operation, often faster than a preassembled mount.

The belly band surrounding the motor is available in over 40 sizes, with custom units easily accommodated. The motor mount assembly fixture is manufactured to meet any belly band size and is an integral part of the system, paying for itself after just a short-run of installations.
